Why do we decorate the Christmas tree? :: FOOYOH ENTERTAINMENT

Why do we decorate the Christmas tree? :: FOOYOH ENTERTAINMENT

A long time ago, people used to decorate trees outside their homes each winter for it was felt the trees has lost their leaves and the spirits living on these trees have abandoned them.
People were worried that without these tree-spirits, the trees will never grow leaves again.
And so to encourage them to grow leaves, they dressed these trees up with colourful strips of cloth.
Come spring, the trees grew leaves again and people have beencontinuing this tradition ever since.
The German started the custom of bringing small fir trees into the home and to continue the tradition, they added strings of beads and colourful sweets, gingerbread and fruits to the tree.

Why Kiss Under the Mistletoe? :: FOOYOH ENTERTAINMENT

Why Kiss Under the Mistletoe? :: FOOYOH ENTERTAINMENT

It is believed that those who kissed under the mistletoe will have happiness and good luck in the following year.
This practice drew from many ancient traditions.
The mistletoe was used by the Druids in their winter celebrations. They revered the plant because it has no roots but yet remained green during the cold months.
The ancient Celtics believed these plants have magical healing powers and used it as an antidote for poison, infertility and to ward off evil spirits.
The plant was also seen as symbol of peace.
The Scandinavians associated the plant with their goddess of love and this may where the practice of kissing under the mistletoe began.
